Find the right canvas for the exact placement, then check what cropping will remove and where text may be hidden. Choose a platform to load a working size; use the calculators and preview to plan a separate export from your original file.

Dimensions here are working canvases unless specifically marked as an official recommendation. Upload limits, device crops and advertising requirements may differ. Confirm the destination's current publishing preview before posting.

Crop to fill versus fit without cropping

Start from an original image. A matching ratio keeps the frame; a different ratio requires choosing what to cut off or adding background. The calculations below assume a centered crop and preserve aspect ratio.

Uses selected placement dimensions

For a 4000 × 3000 source, compare crop to fill with adding background to fit.

Test a title, logo or subtitle position

Copy the bounds of one important element from your editor. X and Y are measured from the top-left of the full canvas (X runs right, Y runs down). This checks the whole element against the selected guide. It cannot automatically detect text, faces or real in-app controls.

Example: a lower subtitle needs moving upward to fit the Meta ad planning zone.

The highlighted content box in the preview is an editing aid, not part of the downloaded overlay.

Choosing a reliable safe-zone preset

Meta's Reels and Stories preset describes paid ad guidance (about 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% sides), not an invariant organic feed crop. TikTok one-line/four-line pixel margins are editable planning estimates; actual caption length, anchors and RTL/add-ons require a placement-specific preview. YouTube Shorts and universal vertical video ads have different overlays. Cross-platform uses the conservative intersection, not a guarantee.

For a real campaign, verify the current creative in the destination's own publishing interface. Keep logos and captions inside the clear area but allow the background to extend edge-to-edge. A correct size alone does not establish a safe placement.

Sources: Meta Reels guidance, TikTok auction in-feed ads and Google Ads vertical video guidance.

Choose a safe-zone template for the actual publishing context

A safe area concerns interface controls covering content; it does not mean all reserved outer pixels are cut away. Empty or zero-pixel custom margins are not a safety guarantee; the final publisher preview determines real coverage. The background can fill the whole creative. Protect only meaningful text, subtitles, logos, faces or calls to action. This checker tests a single frame and manually entered element rectangle, not an entire video or platform compliance.

Work through a Custom overlay in an editorExample input → usable rectangle → export

For a 1080 × 1920 canvas, enter a practice-only Custom reserve of Top 200, Bottom 400, Left 60 and Right 120 px. The clear rectangle begins at X=60, Y=200, and measures 900 × 1320. This is a calculation example, not a recommended publisher safe zone.

  1. Enter your source canvas, reserve values and one text/logo bounding box; select Check position to see whether the whole element fits.
  2. Load a representative image or video frame. Use Crop to fill or Fit whole image to match the composition you intend to export.
  3. Download the transparent PNG overlay. In Canva, Photoshop or Premiere Pro, place it on a temporary upper layer aligned to the same full canvas size. Reposition essential content inside the clear region.
  4. Hide/remove the overlay layer before exporting the final asset. Inspect the exported file in the live publisher's preview and repeat on multiple frames when subjects or subtitles move.
TikTok: captions, add-ons and right-to-left layoutsOne preset cannot cover every variant

Longer captions, anchors, download cards and other TikTok ad add-ons can move or enlarge the covered area. The one-line and four-line presets here are starting estimates, not TikTok-certified pixel boundaries. For an add-on, obtain the matching template in TikTok Ads Manager and enter its actual reserves using Custom. Right-to-left Arabic-region creative can position controls differently; do not assume a left-to-right template is mirrored correctly. Confirm the final campaign preview.

Meta organic versus paid ads, YouTube Shorts versus universal adsChoose by actual destination

Meta's percentage reserves are documented for Reels/Stories advertising. Organic full-screen Reels, feed crops, profile previews, stickers or translated captions may differ. Check those independently. YouTube Shorts and YouTube universal vertical-video advertisements use different reference zones; select only the named context. Cross-platform's conservative envelope does not guarantee any platform will show every element.

Official starting points: Meta Reels ad guide · TikTok in-feed ads (template details may vary) · Google Ads vertical-video guidance.

A reliable five-step export check

  1. Choose the exact placement; record its recommended working ratio and whether it is organic, ad or marketplace creative.
  2. Compare your source dimensions. Crop only if it does not remove essential details; otherwise fit with designed padding or recompose from the master.
  3. Use the Safe Zone Checker if there are interface controls. Check logos/subtitles as rectangles and use a suitable source-backed preset, not a universal promise.
  4. Keep an editable original and export through your image/video editor. These calculators do not edit the source file or guarantee compression/codec compliance.
  5. Inspect the final uploaded asset in the current publishing interface, including alternate previews, overlays, thumbnail and device crops.

Marketplace exception: Etsy listing photos need suitable thumbnail crops and sufficient resolution; the first image should present well square or landscape. Amazon main images may have category-specific rules, so a square 2000×2000 reference alone does not establish listing acceptance.

YouTube exception: Square/vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded after October 15, 2024 can qualify as Shorts under YouTube's stated conditions. A 9:16 master is useful, not the sole eligible shape. Official Shorts eligibility.

Choose the right format for each platform

Keep the decisions that affect the final design

These short platform notes combine the useful distinctions from the previous platform directories. Start with the exact placement in the selector, then adjust the composition—not just the pixel count.

InstagramFormat choices and publishing checks
  • Use 1:1 when the design must remain balanced and reusable across square previews.
  • Use 4:5 for a portrait feed composition; do not force a 3:4 camera photo into 4:5 without checking the side crop.
  • Use 9:16 for full-screen vertical Reels or Stories and preview captions, buttons and account information before publishing.

Workflow: Start with the original image, select the placement, and calculate the crop before adding text. Export a separate version for each materially different shape. Reusing one file for 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16 can cut off faces, products or calls to action.

What this does not guarantee: Organic-post behavior and advertising specifications are not interchangeable. Instagram can update grid previews, upload handling and interface overlays; verify the final composition in the current app before scheduling or paying for distribution.

TikTokFormat choices and publishing checks
  • Create the timeline at 1080 × 1920 so the export is exactly 9:16.
  • Keep faces, captions, product details and calls to action inside a central safe area rather than touching the top, bottom or right edge.
  • Preview the uploaded result in TikTok; safe-area templates are planning aids, not permanent interface guarantees.

Workflow: If the source is landscape, first decide whether to crop, reframe or add a background. Stretching 16:9 directly into 9:16 distorts the picture. Use crop-loss measurements to see how much width disappears, then reposition the subject deliberately.

What this does not guarantee: This guide describes a practical organic-video workflow. Ad placements, effects, captions and app versions may use different overlays or requirements, so confirm the current placement before final delivery.

YouTubeFormat choices and publishing checks
  • Use 16:9 for conventional landscape video; YouTube lists 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440 and 3840 × 2160 among its exact 16:9 examples.
  • For Shorts, use a square or vertical source and check current duration eligibility. A 1080 × 1920 timeline is a practical full-screen 9:16 choice.
  • Do not add black bars to force a ratio. YouTube advises uploading the native aspect ratio so its player can adapt to the viewer's device.

Workflow: Set the editing timeline to the destination shape before placing captions or graphics. Export video and thumbnail as separate assets: they can share a ratio but use different files, compression and safe-area decisions.

What this does not guarantee: Shorts classification depends on shape, upload date, duration and channel context. This page summarizes current official guidance and links to the source pages; check YouTube Studio before publishing a time-sensitive campaign.

LinkedInPersonal and company covers

A personal profile background uses a different canvas from company Page covers. Use 1584 × 396 as a personal working reference and 1128 × 191 as a separate company reference. Do not stretch one to the other. The avatar and responsive layout can hide a part of the art; keep identity text away from likely overlap and inspect the current profile or Page uploader.

Open LinkedIn banner planning. Also compare specific LinkedIn video-ad formats in the filterable size table; advertising specs are not automatically organic format requirements.

FacebookCover and Story need different framing

A Facebook cover is a wide design, not a 9:16 Story. Use the current cover upload preview to protect central text across desktop/mobile and the selected Page/profile context. For Stories, compose in a vertical working frame and plan for captions, buttons or overlays separately. The Meta preset reflects paid-ad planning guidance; it is not a universal margin for organic Stories.

Plan a Facebook cover or open Facebook Story settings.

Upload and preview decisions that a size alone cannot solve

Original platform requirements and real-world exceptions
YouTube: thumbnails, upload workflow and channel artSeparate thumbnail and banner checks

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 for regular video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts thumbnails. Video thumbnails are generally 16:9; Shorts thumbnails 9:16. YouTube currently lists a 2 MB mobile limit for video-thumbnail uploads and a 50 MB desktop limit for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. Shorts custom-thumbnail uploading is available through YouTube Studio on a computer for eligible verified accounts. The dimension calculator does not check file size or account eligibility.

For channel art, use the recommended 2560 × 1440 design canvas; YouTube's minimum is 2048 × 1152. The 1235 × 338 text/logo-safe reference belongs to that minimum canvas, not the entire recommended canvas. YouTube's banner file limit is 6 MB. Extend background art outside the central identity area rather than stretching logos to fill the banner.

Shorts: the ratio is not the entire eligibility ruleSquare and vertical video

A 9:16 edit is useful for a full-screen phone display, but eligible Shorts may also be square. Classification can depend on the upload date, video duration and channel context. For a conventional landscape video, use its native aspect ratio rather than baking in black bars. Check YouTube Studio for the current upload workflow, and review captions separately from the thumbnail.

YouTube Help — three-minute Shorts eligibility.

Etsy: protect your first listing photo in the thumbnail cropA square canvas is optional

Etsy recommends listing photos with width and height of at least 2000 px for detail, while the first listing photo should have both dimensions at least 635 px. Etsy says the first image should be landscape or square to work with cropped previews; a 2000 × 2000 master is a convenient option, not a mandatory square-only format. Keep space around the focal product, inspect the adjusted listing thumbnail, and use the cropping tool when different layouts trim its edges.

Etsy Help — image requirements and thumbnail best practices.

Amazon: a square crop does not certify a product listingCategory, main image and marketplace matter

2000 × 2000 is a useful square editing master, not an independently verified universal Amazon requirement. Before uploading a main image, confirm the active Seller Central instructions for your product category and marketplace, including permitted backgrounds, content coverage and image treatment. Seller Central guidance may require sign-in; the toolkit does not verify listing acceptance or category-specific policies.

Amazon Seller Central — product image guidance (may require login).

LinkedIn and Facebook: profile and Page covers need different compositionsDo not assume one universal device mask

The LinkedIn personal profile background and company Page cover have different proportions. Likewise, Facebook profile and Page covers can render differently on desktops and phones. Keep key text away from avatar overlap, extend backgrounds and check the destination upload preview. The banner workbench compares working artboards without claiming official pixel-perfect device masks for either platform.

Placement-specific details and source notes

Indexable HTML details, usable without JavaScript

Each placement has its own crop, safe-area and upload caveat. Do not apply ad specs to organic uploads automatically. Use the source link as a starting point, but verify any time-sensitive requirement at delivery.

Instagram Post1080 × 1350 · 4:5

Best starting point: 1080 × 1350 px (Practical portrait working size). prepare a feed image that uses vertical space without relying on an uncontrolled platform crop.

Crop: A 3:2 camera photo must lose width to fill 4:5. A square source must lose its top and bottom or gain side canvas.

Keep visible: Keep text and logos away from every edge because the feed, profile grid and share previews may frame the same post differently.

Limit: Instagram supports more than one photo shape. The first item and current publishing preview should guide a carousel; 1080 × 1350 is a useful portrait canvas, not a universal requirement.

Other useful dimensions: 1080 × 1080 (Square post); 1080 × 1440 (3:4 photo); 1080 × 566 (Landscape post).

Instagram Story1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Best starting point: 1080 × 1920 px (Practical full-screen working size). build a full-screen vertical Story while protecting content from interface overlays.

Crop: A 4:5 feed image is too wide and short for a full 9:16 Story. Recompose it or add an intentional background instead of stretching.

Keep visible: Leave generous space near the top and bottom for account controls, replies and calls to action. Preview in the current app because overlays change.

Limit: 1080 × 1920 describes a practical 9:16 canvas. Stickers, captions, links and device controls can reduce the usable area.

Other useful dimensions: 720 × 1280 (Smaller exact 9:16); 2160 × 3840 (Higher-resolution exact 9:16).

Instagram Reel1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Best starting point: 1080 × 1920 px (Practical full-screen working size). prepare a vertical Reel with readable captions and a deliberate feed-preview crop.

Crop: Landscape footage loses most of its sides when it fills 9:16. Reframe shots individually rather than applying one centered crop to the entire edit.

Keep visible: Keep faces, subtitles and calls to action inside a central zone. Check both the full-screen Reel and its feed/profile preview.

Limit: A correct 9:16 export does not guarantee that every important element remains visible under captions, buttons or previews.

Other useful dimensions: 720 × 1280 (Smaller exact 9:16); 1080 × 1350 (4:5 feed preview planning frame).

YouTube Thumbnail3840 × 2160 · 16:9

Best starting point: 3840 × 2160 px (Official recommended 16:9 size). design a high-resolution thumbnail that remains legible on phones and television screens.

Crop: Use a native 16:9 canvas. A square or portrait image must be cropped or composed within a widescreen background.

Keep visible: Keep faces and large text away from the lower-right duration badge and test the design at a very small preview size.

Limit: File-size limits and account eligibility vary by thumbnail workflow. Dimensions alone do not guarantee that a custom thumbnail can be uploaded.

Other useful dimensions: 1280 × 720 (Common 16:9 thumbnail); 1920 × 1080 (Full HD 16:9).

Source: YouTube Help — add video thumbnails · Open this placement in the toolkit

YouTube Banner2560 × 1440 · 16:9

Best starting point: 2560 × 1440 px (Official recommended channel-art canvas). prepare channel art that works across television, desktop and mobile crops.

Crop: YouTube shows different portions of one banner on different devices. Treat the full canvas as background and keep identity content in the centered safe area.

Keep visible: Keep the channel name, logo and call to action inside the centered text-and-logo area; verify the upload preview on every device example.

Limit: The safe-area reference is smaller than the full banner. Do not stretch a 1235 × 338 design to fill 2560 × 1440; extend the background instead.

Other useful dimensions: 2048 × 1152 (Minimum canvas reference); 1235 × 338 (Text and logo safe-area reference).

YouTube Shorts1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Best starting point: 1080 × 1920 px (Practical full-screen 9:16 canvas). edit a vertical Short that fills a phone screen and keeps captions clear of controls.

Crop: Convert landscape footage by selecting shots and tracking the subject. A fixed center crop can remove speakers, demonstrations or on-screen labels.

Keep visible: Keep text away from the right-side actions and lower caption/navigation region, then inspect the uploaded Short in the current mobile app.

Limit: Current Shorts eligibility can depend on shape, duration and upload date. 1080 × 1920 is a practical vertical canvas, not the only possible eligible shape.

Other useful dimensions: 720 × 1280 (Smaller exact 9:16); 1080 × 1080 (Square eligible shape reference).

TikTok Video1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Best starting point: 1080 × 1920 px (Practical high-resolution 9:16 canvas). produce a full-screen vertical TikTok without stretching landscape footage.

Crop: Reframe a landscape source shot by shot or add a designed background. Stretching 16:9 to 9:16 makes people and products unnaturally narrow.

Keep visible: Keep essential content away from the top, bottom and right-side interface. Treat any template as a planning aid and check the live preview.

Limit: Organic posts and ads can use different limits, overlays and accepted formats. This page provides a practical editing canvas, not an ad-delivery contract.

Other useful dimensions: 720 × 1280 (Smaller exact 9:16); 1080 × 1080 (Square alternate source).

LinkedIn Banner1584 × 396 · 4:1

Best starting point: 1584 × 396 px (Official personal background-photo recommendation). design a professional profile banner that survives responsive cropping and avatar overlap.

Crop: Personal and company cover images use different proportions. Start with the correct destination rather than resizing one banner to both.

Keep visible: Keep important content toward the center-right because the profile photo and responsive layout can cover or crop the left side.

Limit: This page targets a personal profile background. Company pages and other LinkedIn modules can require different dimensions.

Other useful dimensions: 3168 × 792 (2× export at the same 4:1 ratio); 1128 × 191 (Company cover reference).

Facebook Cover Photo1640 × 624 · 205:78

Best starting point: 1640 × 624 px (Practical high-resolution page cover canvas). prepare a page cover with room for responsive desktop and mobile crops.

Crop: Desktop and mobile views reveal different portions of the cover. Extend the background and keep key content near the center.

Keep visible: Keep text and logos away from every edge and from possible profile-picture overlap.

Limit: Facebook cover rendering varies by profile or Page type and device. Confirm the current upload preview.

Other useful dimensions: 820 × 312 (Common desktop reference); 1640 × 720 (Taller source master).

Facebook Story1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Best starting point: 1080 × 1920 px (Practical full-screen 9:16 canvas). build a vertical Story without hiding key content under controls.

Crop: Recompose square and landscape assets rather than stretching them into a vertical frame.

Keep visible: Reserve generous top and bottom space for account, reply and call-to-action elements.

Limit: Story interface overlays and ad specifications can differ. Verify the actual publishing preview.

Other useful dimensions: 720 × 1280 (Smaller exact 9:16); 2160 × 3840 (Higher-resolution exact 9:16).

Pinterest Pin1000 × 1500 · 2:3

Best starting point: 1000 × 1500 px (Official standard 2:3 creative recommendation). design a vertical Pin that uses feed space without being cut off.

Crop: Start with 2:3 rather than making an excessively tall design that may be truncated in the feed.

Keep visible: Keep the headline and product central, with padding for badges and responsive previews.

Limit: Different Pin and ad formats can use other ratios. Confirm the named format before export.

Other useful dimensions: 2000 × 3000 (2× standard Pin); 1000 × 1000 (Square Pin).

Etsy Listing Photo2000 × 2000 · 1:1

Best starting point: 2000 × 2000 px (Practical high-quality square listing master). prepare consistent product photos with enough detail for zoom.

Crop: Shoot with extra space, then keep the product scale and framing consistent across the listing gallery.

Keep visible: Avoid edge text and ensure the first image remains understandable as a small search thumbnail.

Limit: Listing thumbnails and full gallery views may crop differently. Check the current listing preview.

Amazon Product Image2000 × 2000 · 1:1

Best starting point: 2000 × 2000 px (Practical zoom-ready square product image). prepare a detailed marketplace product image with consistent framing.

Crop: Keep the whole product visible and crop consistently; do not stretch a rectangular photograph into a square.

Keep visible: Use a clean main-image composition and keep important details readable in thumbnails.

Limit: Amazon category and marketplace policies can differ, especially for main-image background and product coverage.

Other useful dimensions: 1600 × 1600 (Square zoom-ready reference); 1000 × 1000 (Smaller square reference).

Sizes are references for composition, not proof of upload acceptance. A filtered row retains its source link; paid-ad references should be checked in the destination ad manager. A different aspect ratio requires cropping, padding or recomposition, not stretching.
