Dimensions made practical

Aspect ratio guides

Compare popular image and video shapes, find matching pixel dimensions and choose the right ratio for each screen or platform.

Aspect ratio vs resolution

An aspect ratio describes shape: the relationship between width and height. Resolution describes the actual pixel count. For example, 1280×720, 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 are different resolutions that all share the 16:9 ratio.

aspect ratio = width ÷ height

Higher resolution does not change the ratio when width and height scale by the same factor.

Choose a ratio in three steps

  1. Start with the destination: screen, social feed, story, presentation or print.
  2. Choose the required shape before setting the final resolution.
  3. Check whether your source needs cropping with the crop loss calculator.

For a custom size, enter its width and height in the aspect ratio calculator.
