What does a 5:4 aspect ratio mean?
The width is 1.25 times the height. It is slightly narrower than 4:3, so the two ratios should not be treated as interchangeable.
1000 × 800, 1280 × 1024 and 2500 × 2000 are exact 5:4 sizes. Aspect ratio describes shape, not quality: increasing both dimensions preserves the same composition while adding pixels.
How to calculate 5:4 dimensions

When to use 5:4
Choose 5:4 when the output device or print requires it. A 4:3 source must lose a small amount from the left and right to fill 5:4; fitting it instead leaves narrow bands above and below.
The most useful comparison is 4:3. In portrait orientation, 4:5 is the inverse shape.

Crop, fit or resize?
Resize both dimensions proportionally when the source already matches 5:4. If it does not, filling the frame crops part of the source; fitting preserves everything but leaves unused canvas space. Never change only width or height, because that stretches the image.
