Finish a website card image

Example brief: turn a 4000 × 3000 photo into a 1200 × 630 card. Keep the master unchanged and work on a copy.

  1. Inspect the source: confirm pixel dimensions rather than relying on the file name.
  2. Plan the 40:21 crop: the example retains 4000 × 2100 pixels before resizing.
  3. Crop around the subject in your editor, then resize to 1200 × 630 and export.
  4. Inspect the exported file again and preview the card in the actual page layout.

Crop or resize?

Proportional resizing changes pixel dimensions while keeping the same shape. Cropping removes edges to create a different shape. Stretching changes the shape without removing content, but it distorts the image and is rarely the right choice.

When source and destination ratios differ, compare crop loss with adding padding or changing the layout.
