A 3000 × 2400 image prints at 10 × 8 inches at 300 PPI. At 150 PPI, the same pixels cover 20 × 16 inches. Neither calculation adds detail or modifies the source file. To find the dimensions of a file first, use the image aspect ratio checker.
Pixels to inches, centimeters and millimeters
Print inches = image pixels ÷ PPIPrint cm = image pixels ÷ PPI × 2.54Print mm = image pixels ÷ PPI × 25.4Apply the formula independently to width and height. For example, 6000 × 4000 pixels at 300 PPI gives 20 × 13.333 inches, approximately 50.8 × 33.867 cm. The aspect ratio stays 3:2 because the same density is applied to both axes.
The displayed measurements are rounded for readability. The calculation uses the underlying values, so do not treat a rounded measurement as an exact cutting template. For an exact delivery size, work from the requested physical dimensions and calculate the needed pixels.
Calculate pixels needed at 300 DPI
Required pixels = print inches × target PPIFor an 8 × 10 inch print at 300 PPI, prepare at least 2400 × 3000 pixels. For a metric size, divide centimeters by 2.54 or millimeters by 25.4 before multiplying by PPI. This calculator rounds each result upward to a whole pixel so that the raster does not fall below the target density.

Some A4 references use 2480 × 3508 because they round to the nearest integer. Our minimum-density approach rounds 2480.315 upward to 2481. The one-pixel difference reflects the rounding rule; follow your print provider's exact specifications when supplied.
DPI vs PPI: which number matters for an image?
PPI means pixels per inch: the density of image samples across a physical print. DPI means dots per inch: a printer's dot resolution. Multiple printer dots can represent one image pixel, so a printer's advertised DPI is not a direct requirement for the image's PPI.
People often search for a “DPI calculator” when they need image PPI, which is why this page uses both terms. The calculations here concern image pixels. Adobe explains the distinction in its guides to printed image resolution and printer resolution.
Is 300 PPI always necessary?
300 PPI is a common starting point for detailed prints viewed up close. The useful target depends on viewing distance, source sharpness, paper, printing process and the provider's requirements. A large poster viewed from farther away can use a different target. The tool compares your image against the target you enter; it does not certify print quality. Fit vs fill: check effective PPI before printing
When the image ratio differs from the print ratio, you need a placement choice. Fit retains the entire image and leaves unused paper on two edges. Fill covers the print area and crops image content. Both options preserve image proportions.
For a 3000 × 2000 image on a 10 × 8 inch print, fit produces a 10 × 6.667 inch image at 300 PPI, with unused space above and below. Fill uses 250 PPI, displays the image at 12 × 8 inches before cropping, and removes 16.667% of its area from the sides.

Resolution metadata, resampling and print preparation
Changing an image's embedded resolution from 72 to 300 PPI without resampling keeps the pixel count unchanged. It changes the physical size implied by that metadata. A print application can override the implied size, so the effective PPI depends on the actual placement dimensions.
Resampling changes the number of pixels. Upsampling can create more samples, but does not recreate detail missing from the original capture. Before ordering a print, inspect the source for blur, compression artifacts and the effect of your chosen crop, then request a proof when appropriate.
Bleed and margins
The calculator uses the physical area you enter. For a document requiring 3 mm bleed on every edge, add 6 mm to both trim dimensions before calculating a full-bleed raster. For example, A4 plus that bleed is 216 × 303 mm. Keep important content inside the provider's safe margin. Bleed, printer borders and printable-area restrictions are not added automatically.

How large can I print a 3000×2400 image?
At 300 PPI, it is 10 × 8 inches or 25.4 × 20.32 cm. At 150 PPI, it is 20 × 16 inches. Choose the target based on the print process, viewing distance and source quality.
How many pixels do I need for A4 at 300 DPI?
A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Multiplying its size in inches by 300 gives approximately 2480.315 × 3507.874 pixels. This tool rounds up to 2481 × 3508 to meet at least 300 PPI on both axes.
Can a 72 DPI image print well?
The metadata number alone does not decide that. An image with enough pixels can have a high effective PPI when placed at a smaller print size, regardless of a 72 PPI metadata tag.
Why does fill show a lower PPI than fit?
Fill enlarges the image enough to cover both dimensions of the paper. When ratios differ, this uses fewer source pixels per printed inch and crops the excess. Fit keeps the image smaller to retain all its content.
Does this tool change the DPI of my image?
No. It calculates dimensions and placement using numbers you enter. Use your image editor to set metadata or export a resized file.
Do megapixels determine maximum print size?
Megapixels give total pixel count, but you also need image proportions and a target PPI to calculate width and height. Start with the megapixel to resolution calculator if you only know MP and ratio.
