Social Media Image & Video Sizes

Look up reference dimensions by platform and media type, then copy a working size. Check the placement label: advertising specifications are not automatically requirements for ordinary posts.

Tip: platform specifications can change. Treat these as practical common-size references and verify exact publishing requirements for your current workflow.

How to use this social media size guide

  1. Filter by platform and image or video.
  2. Choose the placement, then copy its working dimensions.
  3. Need a different resolution at the same ratio? Use the missing-dimension calculator, and check that the new size meets the placement requirements. This table looks up sizes; it does not calculate custom exports.
  4. Preview the post inside the current publishing interface before scheduling or paying for distribution.

Official rows are drawn from first-party platform documentation for the named placement. Practical rows are common working canvases where the platform does not provide one stable organic-post specification. A recommended size is not always a hard upload limit.

Ratios matter more than one memorized size

Platforms resize media for different screens, but the ratio controls how the frame is cropped. Start with the required shape, then choose enough pixels for the intended quality.

  • 1:1 for square media
  • 4:5 for compact portrait posts
  • 9:16 for full-screen vertical media
  • 16:9 for landscape video and thumbnails
  • 2:3 for vertical Pinterest creative

If an existing asset uses another shape, compare fit and crop dimensions with the converter.

Safe areas and responsive cropping

Interface elements such as captions, account names, buttons and device controls can cover parts of an image or video. Keep faces, product details, logos and essential text away from extreme edges.

Safe zones are placement-specific and can change as apps update. Templates are useful starting points, but the final check should happen in the platform's own preview. This is especially important when one creative is reused across feeds, Stories, Reels and ad placements.

What the official guidance currently says

  • YouTube lists 16:9 computer playback resolutions from 640 × 360 through 7680 × 4320, and currently recommends 3840 × 2160 video thumbnails plus 2160 × 3840 Shorts thumbnails.
  • Meta describes Reels as a 9:16 vertical placement and may automatically adjust or expand creative for it.
  • TikTok's creative guidance favors 9:16 vertical video and at least 720p for advertising creative.
  • LinkedIn documents 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 and 16:9 video ad dimensions.
  • X documents expanded image and video ad ratios plus 1080 × 1920 as the maximum for vertical video ads.
  • Pinterest recommends 2:3 or 1000 × 1500 for standard image ads and warns that taller ratios may be cut off in feeds.

Organic formats and advertising formats are not interchangeable. Check the row label and source before treating a value as a requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Why do social media size recommendations change?

Platforms add placements, alter interfaces and update processing rules. That is why this page shows a review date and links to first-party sources.

Is a recommended size the same as a maximum size?

No. A recommendation is a useful working canvas; minimums, maximums and accepted upload ranges may be different.

Should I use one file for every platform?

You can reuse a source, but create placement-specific crops when important content would be covered or removed. Square, portrait and vertical layouts often need different composition.

What is the best ratio for vertical video?

9:16 is the common full-screen vertical shape. Keep important elements inside a central safe area and verify the current placement preview.
