1:1 Aspect Ratio Calculator

1:1 creates a square canvas, useful for profile graphics, square posts and designs where equal width and height are required. Enter a width or height and AspectRatioZ calculates the matching 1:1 dimension instantly.

What does a 1:1 aspect ratio mean?

A 1:1 aspect ratio is a perfect square: width and height are equal. Its decimal ratio is 1.000. A 512 × 512 icon, 1080 × 1080 post and 2048 × 2048 product image all have the same shape even though their pixel counts differ.

Square files are easy to reuse in grids and centered layouts. Remember that some profile interfaces display a square source inside a circle, so important details should stay near the center and away from the four corners.

How to calculate a square size

For 1:1, the missing dimension always equals the known dimension. Enter either side in the calculator and use the result as the other side.

height = width
width = height
Example: a width of 1200 px requires a height of 1200 px.

Useful exact sizes

  • 256 × 256 for small interface graphics
  • 512 × 512 for larger icons and source avatars
  • 1080 × 1080 for a high-resolution square canvas
  • 2048 × 2048 when extra editing room is useful

When square is the better choice

Choose 1:1 when the design must remain balanced in a square card, gallery tile or product grid. A square is also convenient when the same asset will appear in both portrait and landscape layouts because the subject can be centered.

1:1 vs. 4:5

A 4:5 portrait image is 25% taller than a square at the same width, so it provides more vertical composition space. Use 1:1 for symmetry and broad reuse; use 4:5 when the destination rewards a taller frame.

For a square profile image, keep the subject away from the corners because a platform may display the square inside a circle. Inspect the source image first, then measure the loss from a square crop. A square ratio alone does not specify the platform's pixel requirements; check the size guide.

For a taller alternative, compare the 4:5 calculator. To inspect a square source file, use the image aspect ratio checker.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1080 × 1080 a 1:1 ratio?

Yes. The two sides are equal, so 1080 × 1080 simplifies directly to 1:1.

Can any image be converted to 1:1?

Yes, but a non-square source must either be cropped or placed inside a square canvas with space around it. Stretching only one dimension will distort the image.

Does a 1:1 image have to be 1080 pixels?

No. The ratio describes shape, not size. Any equal positive width and height form a 1:1 image.

How should I prepare a square profile image?

Start with equal dimensions and keep faces, logos and text near the center. This reduces the chance of losing important details if the platform displays the image as a circle.
