What does a 3:2 aspect ratio mean?

The frame is one and a half times as wide as it is high. Many full-frame and APS-C cameras capture 3:2 natively.

1500 × 1000, 3000 × 2000 and 6000 × 4000 are exact 3:2 sizes. Aspect ratio describes shape, not quality: increasing both dimensions preserves the same composition while adding pixels.

How to calculate 3:2 dimensions

Enter one known dimension above. To calculate manually, use these equations and round only the final result to a whole pixel.

height = width × 2 ÷ 3
width = height × 3 ÷ 2

An approximate result is normal when the chosen width or height cannot produce a whole-pixel match. For video encoding, even dimensions are often safer.

When to use 3:2

Keep 3:2 when you want to preserve a camera original or print at 4 × 6 inches without cropping. Moving to 16:9 trims the top and bottom; moving to 4:3 trims the sides.

Compare it with 4:3 for many phones and Micro Four Thirds cameras, or 16:9 for widescreen video.

Crop, fit or resize?

Resize both dimensions proportionally when the source already matches 3:2. If it does not, filling the frame crops part of the source; fitting preserves everything but leaves unused canvas space. Never change only width or height, because that stretches the image.

It matches the proportions historically associated with 35 mm film and remains common in interchangeable-lens cameras.

Is a 4 × 6 photo 3:2?

Yes. Reducing 6:4 gives 3:2, so a 3:2 image fits a 4 × 6 print without ratio cropping.

Can I post a 3:2 image online?

Yes. Websites can display it directly, although a social platform may preview it inside a different-shaped container.
