What does a 3:4 aspect ratio mean?
3:4 describes a portrait rectangle whose height is one third greater than its width. Its decimal width-to-height value is 0.75:1. Rotating the same frame produces the landscape ratio 4:3.
Exact examples include 600 × 800, 768 × 1024, 1080 × 1440, 1200 × 1600 and 2160 × 2880. Resolution changes pixel quantity; it does not change the shape when both dimensions scale together.
How to calculate 3:4 dimensions
Multiply width by 4/3 to calculate height, or multiply height by 3/4 to calculate width.
height = width × 4 ÷ 3width = height × 3 ÷ 4Example: 1080 × 4 ÷ 3 = 1440.
A width divisible by three or a height divisible by four gives an exact whole-pixel result.
3:4 vs 4:5 and 9:16
4:5 is slightly wider and shorter than 3:4. 9:16 is much taller and is commonly used for full-screen vertical video. Choose the destination first; these ratios are not interchangeable without cropping or padding.
Do not confuse 3:4 with 4:3. The order of the numbers determines orientation.
Use 3:4 for photos and portrait artwork
3:4 matches many camera and phone-photo shapes and provides more vertical room than 4:5. It is useful for portrait compositions, product photography and artwork, but a platform may display a different preview crop.

Is 1080 × 1440 exactly 3:4?
Yes. Dividing both dimensions by 360 gives exactly 3:4.
Is 3:4 the same as 4:3?
No. They use the same proportions in opposite orientations: 3:4 is portrait and 4:3 is landscape.
How much is cropped when 3:4 becomes 4:5?
Keeping the same height, a centered 3:4 image loses 6.67% of its total width, or about 3.33% from each side. Subject-aware cropping may use different offsets.
Does 3:4 specify a pixel resolution?
No. It specifies only proportional shape. Many different pixel dimensions can be exactly 3:4.
