Take a 1920 × 1080 16:9 source going into a 1080 × 1080 square output. Crop-to-fill keeps the full source height after scaling and shows a centered 1080-pixel-wide portion, removing 840 source pixels across both sides. Fit scales the full source to 1080 × 608 and leaves 472 vertical pixels for padding.
The comparison makes the choice concrete: crop discards about 43.75% of the source width, while fit shows the entire image at about 56.3% of the square's height. A percentage alone does not decide the result, but it exposes how much composition each option asks you to sacrifice.

Let content importance decide

Make a fitted layout intentional
