Understand the 16:9 to 9:16 crop
When 1920 × 1080 footage fills a 1080 × 1920 canvas, its height must scale to 1920. At the same scale its width becomes roughly 3413 pixels, but the sequence displays only 1080. The visible width is about 31.6% of the scaled source, which explains why a speaker standing at one side disappears.
Starting with 4K gives more source pixels and may allow a cleaner 1080p crop, but it does not change the visible composition percentage. Resolution helps detail; it cannot make a wide scene fit a narrow shape without cropping, padding or redesign.
