Keep the three boundaries distinct

The document edge includes bleed; the trim line marks intended final dimensions; the safe line sits inside trim. These boundaries serve different tolerances. Treating them as one line causes either white slivers or clipped communication.

Background color and imagery should continue through bleed, while text and logos remain inside safe area. Decorative content may cross trim intentionally, but anything essential must tolerate the printer's cutting variation.

Calculate the complete bleed canvas

If an 8×10 print requires 0.125 inch bleed on every edge, supplied dimensions become 8.25 × 10.25 inches. At 300 PPI, that is 2475 × 3075 pixels. Bleed adds twice its edge amount to each overall dimension.

Do not add 0.125 only once to width and height. If requirements are expressed in millimeters, keep units consistent or convert using 25.4 mm per inch before calculating pixels. Round according to the provider's template.

Extend artwork without stretching subjects

For a full-bleed photograph, crop or position the image so nonessential edge content continues beyond trim. Do not stretch the entire image simply to cover bleed. When edge content is insufficient, choose a slightly deeper proportional crop or extend a simple background carefully.

Review faces, borders, signatures and product edges against safe and trim lines. Thin designed borders reveal even small cutting variation and may look uneven; consider a wider border or a different production method.

Export according to the printer's workflow

Some printers want crop marks and a PDF; others explicitly reject marks and expect a raster at full bleed dimensions. Follow the named product instructions for file format, color profile, flattening and embedded fonts.

Inspect the exported page box or pixel dimensions, then order a proof when color and edge placement matter. Keep an editable master containing guides so future trim sizes can be produced without modifying the delivered derivative.
