How big is a 4 x 6 photo?
A nominal 4 x 6 photo is 4 inches by 6 inches, equal to 10.16 x 15.24 centimeters or 101.6 x 152.4 millimeters. In landscape the dimensions are written 6 x 4; the paper and area are unchanged. The format has a 3:2 landscape ratio or 2:3 portrait ratio.
Real lab output can vary slightly because borderless printing and trimming need tolerance. If an exact physical fit matters, such as a pre-cut mount or document submission, check the provider's finished-size specification rather than assuming every service trims to precisely the same edge.
4 x 6 pixels at 300, 240 and 150 PPI
The calculation is inches multiplied by pixels per inch. At 300 PPI, 4 x 300 and 6 x 300 produce 1200 x 1800 pixels. At 240 PPI the target is 960 x 1440, and at 150 PPI it is 600 x 900. Rotate those dimensions for landscape.
A larger file does not need to be reduced before upload unless the lab sets a limit. A 3000 x 4500 image has the correct 2:3 ratio and can be printed at 4 x 6 with ample source pixels. The print workflow will downsample it as needed; quality still depends on focus and compression.
Will a phone or camera photo fit 4 x 6?
Many interchangeable-lens cameras capture 3:2, which matches 4 x 6. Many phones default to 4:3, which is slightly squarer. To fill 4 x 6 from a 4:3 source, part of the top and bottom is removed in portrait, or part of the left and right in landscape.
Preview the crop instead of accepting automatic centering. Move the frame to protect faces and important detail. If every pixel must remain, fit the full image and accept narrow borders. Do not stretch a 4:3 photo to 3:2 because circles, faces and products will become visibly distorted.
Prepare a 4 x 6 file for printing
Start with the original file, crop to 2:3 or 3:2, and check the lab preview. Leave a safe margin around critical content because borderless trimming can remove a small edge area. Export in the file type and color space requested by the print provider; high-quality JPEG in sRGB is common, but provider guidance wins.
Judge the file at the intended print size, not only at extreme screen zoom. Avoid repeated JPEG saves, aggressive sharpening and unnecessary upscaling. If the source has fewer than 1200 x 1800 pixels, calculate its effective PPI and decide whether the result is acceptable for the viewing distance.
